Hydraulics 101: Buffer Tanks, Flow Rates, and Stable Operation

A heat pump is a machine; a heating system is a network. If the network is unstable, the machine will look “bad” even if it isn’t.

Why buffer tanks exist

They help prevent short cycling and smooth out flow/temperature swings—especially in systems with small water volumes or aggressive zone control.

Flow rate matters

Too little flow can cause errors and poor heat transfer; too much flow wastes pumping energy. Always check the manufacturer’s recommended flow window.
